This part was used to create an optical AND gate, with the promoters connected to circuitry activated by red and blue lights.

The production of PHA was characterised by the Plating cells on Nile red plates, a dye that stains the biomaterial. </br>

It was found that the production of PHA was greatly enhanced when exposed to two lights as seen in Figure 1 A. There was some cross talk, as when exposed to one light (red), some fluorescence is also observed, as seend in figure 1 B. However, little to no fluorescence is observed when no light is exposed to the cells, as seen on figure 1 C. This shows the functionality of the AND gate implemented in the production of this biomaterial.
